Going for a 2,5″ external harddrive
I got tired of the noise which my 3 harddrives are producing (inside the computer case). Even the “turn off hard disks after X minutes” option in the power options of the windows xp control panel did not help much as some applications in the background were turning the drives on again after a few seconds during the standby mode.
After removing them I suppose that I can also remove 1-2 fans to furtherly remove noise as the majority of the heat in my case is being produced by the harddrives.
Anyway, my harddrives are:

You name it, Western Digital in all shapes and colors. After surfing the web I came to the conclusion that there are no 3,5″ internal harddrives that work at 5400 rpm. And 7200 rpm is just too loud according to my newly acquired non-gamer opinion. Not to name the 10000 rpm of the raptor.
My exact plan is to have an external harddrive which I can take with me, filled with MP3 files, downloads and documents. I will keep the raptor in case I want to play some games, I feel that the 2,5″ is not going to fulfill my gaming needs. I will be having it in standby mode in times when I don’t need it.
I crossed a well looking 2,5″ case on ebay, it had the Sony Vaio brand logo on it. Never seen it yet on the market. But they deliver from hong kong, I can’t wait that long. So I found another page with some nice external harddrive case overview, you should give it a try even if it is in German.
It’s hard to find a nice looking case, while it is small and silent at the same time. I will let you know as soon as I found one.
Ah yea, guess what will be my choice of the brand for the 2,5″ external harddrive
Update: Friday, 28th of December 2007
I went for a Western Digital Scorpio 250GB with 5400rpm. I ordered it 3 days ago. Should arrive within the next week. And I found no case for it, so I will be using it as an internal drive first.

Update: Sunday, 6th of January 2007
My 2.5″ harddrive came on Thursday. I copied all important files to it. I connected it and removed the other three 3.5″ drives. The operating system’s loading speed went down a bit, but it is in no way disturbing. Now the noise: To me it seems to be totally noiseless inside the case even at full load! It was really worth the 120€. I could also remove 2 fans as there was much less heat.
