6 days after the official release of Windows Vista SP1: The activation crack.
It’s official now: The first activation crack for Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 is out.
It is floating around in P2P networks, you can also find it on The Pirate Bay but be aware of fake torrents. Another demonstration of Microsoft’s bullet proof anti-piracy techniques. The only question that bothers me is: When is the next crack coming out?
It was clear to me that cracking SP1 to work with a stolen key was an easy game: The new protection was client based only. All effective protections that Microsoft has made had server checks.
Do cracks show that software is not worth the price?
The released crack is one of never ending proofs that the way software producers are marketing their software is bad. As long as people want free software, free software WILL exist. Even if specific organizations made it illegal to own them.
An exception is a dictatorship where software companies can criminalize anyone they like for using their software in a way they don’t like, or parts of it.
And perhaps Microsoft does not really want to banish all cracks, their software being freely distributed serves as free advertising in poor countries where normal adverts would never reach.
More and more moving to free alternatives
The high cost of Microsoft products is leading the move of whole governments to free software. The French government for example is completely moving to Linux. Read more about it here: French parliament says hello to open source applications.
I made my move to Ubuntu Linux long ago. Yeah it does not support so many games yet, but in every other aspect it totally satisfies me.
